So you’ve setup your business or brand’s Facebook page. So how do you make it look pretty? In this post I’m going to give you a few tips on how to design your timeline cover image, profile picture and tab images.
To design these images you need a program like Photoshop, Gimp (free) or an online image editor (free). There is no need to purchase any software. A free image editor will do.
Timeline cover image
Let’s start with the timeline cover. This is the large image at the top. It needs to be 851 x 315 px. For the best results, design it to exactly those dimensions, so that your image won’t get cropped or enlarged which will result in pixelation.
So what information or images do you add to your cover? You can place an image of one of your products, your latest product, a short description of your service or your USP.
When picking colours be sure to choose your brand’s colours to create a cohesive look. See how First National Bank used the blue and orange of their logo and applied it to their cover image:
When designing your cover keep in mind that the profile picture will cover a small area over it. Do not place any important information there. I’ve placed a few guidelines on my Photoshop file here to help me see where the profile picture is going to be:
Profile picture
Which brings us to the profile picture. You’ll want to use an image that fits into the square nicely, preferably your logo. If your logo is rectangular in shape like mine, try to use only a part of it. I used the clementine in my logo for my profile picture. This image needs to be 180 x 180 px.
See how Nubby Twiglet used the cross element of her logo in her profile picture:
Tab images
These images need to be 111 x 74 px. These are the small images under the timeline cover and are the placeholder images for your apps. You might have apps for Twitter, Pinterest, your blog feed, newsletter and so on. Creating placeholder images for these will help create a cohesive look for your page.
Again, try to use your brand’s colours. See how Nubby Twiglet used the grey, red and black of her brand’s colours.
The Gadget Flow used bright colours for theirs:
Happiness Is… also uses custom tab images:
How to add your custom image to a tab
Hover over the tab, click the pencil icon and choose Edit Settings.
And of course I do too 🙂
Then next to Custom Tab Image click on Change.
A new window will open. Hover over the existing tab image and click on Edit.
You will now be able to upload your own image.
That concludes my tutorial on how to customise your Facebook fan page. I hope you’ve learnt something new! Here are more Facebook page to be inspired by:
