I’m not a Twitter or social media expert, but I’ve been on Twitter for a while now and think I can spot the mistakes that new users are making.
1. Using too many hashtags
You don’t have to add a hashtag before every word (hard to believe, but I’ve really seen people do it). You don’t even have to add hashtags in your tweets at all. I would say a maximum of 3 is acceptable.
2. Disappearing from Twitter
Sometimes I go through the list of people I follow and notice that I haven’t seen some of their faces in my feed for months. If you set up a Twitter account you have to tweet often. Your followers want to hear from you! If you don’t have time to tweet often, you’ll have to hire a social media team, or don’t setup an account at all.
3. Only tweeting about your products
This one is really irritating. Twitter is not a tool to only promote your products. It’s about connecting with others and joining the conversation. You can tweet about your offerings every once in a while, but it shouldn’t be all that you’re doing. It’s one of the fastest ways to get yourself unfollowed. If someone is constantly tweeting their new products, I just skim over it.
4. Only tweeting links
It’s great to share new info with your followers, but you have to show them that you’re a real person too. Tweet about interesting things that happen in your life, or share a behind-the-scenes picture. People follow people, not robots.
5. Sharing too much information
Okay, I just said that you should be more human, but that doesn’t mean that you should tell me that you have a bad case of diarrhoea and you’re running to the bathroom every five minutes. That’s what Facebook is for 😉
6. Sharing unimportant information
“I think I’m going home nowâ€
