In this post I’m going to be explaining what the wedding invitation design process involves and what you can expect.
Step 1: Explore
The client emails me a description of what they require. I follow up with a short questionnaire to get a good idea of what they need.
Step 2: Proposal
When I have the client’s answers I draw up a proposal outlining what they can expect, how many revisions and concepts are included, the cost, etc. This is a no-obligation proposal so if the client is not ready, she can decline it. Or she can accept it and we can move forward.
Step 3: Deposit
A 50% deposit is required up-front to start work.
Step 4: Inspiration
This is the fun part where I search for inspiration on the Internet, books, magazines, etc.
Step 5: Sketching
During this phase I sketch a few ideas on a notepad.
Step 6: Design
Once I have a nice concept to work from I start developing it in my chosen software – usually CorelDraw but sometimes Photoshop. This is the step that takes the longest since I have to play with layouts to see which works best.
Step 7: Feedback
Once I’m happy with how the invite looks I send the draft to the client for feedback. Any changes within the agreed scope is welcome. The number of revision rounds is stated in the proposal (usually 3 rounds). A revision round is a list of changes the client sends to me.
Step 8: Apply revisions
I make the changes to the invite as requested by the client. So in this phase the draft is sent back and forth and changes are made.
Step 9: Design sign-off
When the client is happy with the design, it is signed off.
Step 10: Final invoice
I create a print-ready PDF file that the client can print at home or take to their chosen printing service. The design is sometimes printed out on my home printer to check that the colours look okay. I then send the final invoice to the client.
Step 11: Final deliverables
After payment the client receives a print-ready PDF file and the design process is complete!
